Municipalities are responsible for the separate collection of packaging wastes (from domestic, hazardous and medical wastes) at source

In coordination with İSTAÇ, which is authorized by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, municipalities and institutions granted with a packaging waste collecting license came together and began to implement the system.

A five-step-plan to be executed in accordance with the demographical, geographical and economical demands of the region as a whole within the following ten years was prepared.

Reasons for the gradual execution were the newness of system, necessity of some time for the adaptation of the region and implementation of a waste collection system meeting regional demands.

Abide by the plan, a pilot region was determined. After the education process, by means of equipments like blue plastic bags (for the separate collection of packaging wastes) and containers, packaging wastes were collected separately at source.

Within the scope of the protocols, at the pilot region in Büyükçekmece a population of 8.000 was reached, educational and informative seminars were organized, separate collection of packaging wastes at source was given a start. Application plans related with the separate collection of packaging wastes at source in Beyoğlu and Gaziosmanpaşa municipalities were completed.
